Show #053: I’ve Never Tasted Shatner

Sad_party_300The fifty-threeth episode of our podcast, Paul and Storm Talk About Some Stuff for Five to Ten Minutes (On Average), is now online.

This week’s episode: We arbitrarily declare our first anniversary, and look back on a little more than a year’s worth of podcasts, debating what worked and what didn’t; Paul laments that Storm now weighs less than he does; Paul opens the floor to public discussion of Storm’s Vandyck; and we make bold, reckless predictions for the future.

AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION ALERT: A referendum on Storm’s facial hair: did you prefer the goatee (circle beard, whatever you want to call it)? Or do you like a naked-faced Storm better?

Re: beard. Do what you want, man. If you want to rock the goatee, rock on.

Is the RSS feed not working, or is it just me?

    Feed strangeness…

Both the main “original” feed — http://www.paulandstorm.com/feed/ — and the podcast feed — http://www.paulandstorm.com/archives/category/podcast/feed — seem to be just fine, and the feed is valid.

However, the feedburner version, despite several pings, does not include the latest post. Guessing something’s funky w/feedburner, as we’ve made no changes on our end to account for the problems.

Let us know if it clears up.

    P&S.

I got nothin’. Podcast won’t play for me no matter where I try to link up to it from. I hope this get’s fixed soon. Work is rough till I get my fix.

You shouldn’t have asked for opinions on facial hair, because I’ll give you mine, which is: facial hair is disgusting. It does not look good on anyone, anywhere, for any reason, ever.

I’ve been after Gordon to get rid of his beard ever since he started growing it (I told you this, Paul) but he refuses to listen.

  9. Posted August 20, 2009 at 11:51 am | Permalink

    I preferred the beard.

I agree with the “taken more seriously” aspect of having a beard. My beard made life so much easier when I was 18-20; I pretty much never got carded. There was a time when I was amused to be mistaken for being older than I was.

So, who has pictures of naked-faced Storm to share with us? I haven’t seen him without the Vandyck, so I can’t say whether it’s better or not.

@Jack F: On Zune, I’m back to having to resubscribe every week just to get new episodes of the podcast to show up & sync. I used to have to do that in the beginning, too and it eventually sorted itself out.

Firstly, congrats on the “podcast anniversary”…what a long, strange trip it’s been.

Second, if anyone is driving a bus to the DC-area show, per our Overlord’s bequest, please stop in State College and pick me up. πŸ™‚

Thirdly, as a goat wearer, I always encourage those of us who can sport facial hair to use our powers for good…but it’s all up to the midi-chlorians.

Fourthly (and finally), bacon may have finally jumped the shark on the SF episode of No Reservations when Bourdain had a Bacon Latte at Pirate Cat Coffee (I believe that was the name of the joint).

Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow.

Get a Samwise beard. Google Image search it.
Gratz aswell to the 1 year anniversary
And Bacon DID NOT jump the shark. I ate it first.

The link through feedburner does have the show, but when you try and download it (it comes in from http://www.nuggetman.com/podcast/PS_5-10_053.mp3) the download stops about 60% of the way through (dejected Arrrr).

I’ll try it again from the high speed connection at work. That seemed to get around the previous download problems.

Not having heard the podcast yet, I’ll just say that I thought Storm looked just fine down in Ardmore. He looked far less Canadian than that other group.

One consequence of losing the facial hair is that now your Theme Song is innacurate. Although technically, since the lyrics say “goatee” but it’s actually a Vandyke, one could argue that it was never accurate in the first place. How curious.

  15. Posted August 21, 2009 at 2:32 pm | Permalink

I’m gonna need pictures of Storm with and without the Vandyke before I can render an opinion. So…make with the JPGs. Or PNGs. Or, you know…whatever.

A big congratulations on Storm for losing – was it 45 lbs? From 230 to 185, right? That is amazing and you should be proud!

I would also like to see facial hair comparison pics before giving my opinion; that being said, you should do whatever you like. Of course.

Will you be playing your new song at Jammin’ Java?

Ah! Also, as a fellow Paul McCartney fan, I enjoyed this article in the Washington Post and think you might too: http://tinyurl.com/n678sd

And: Is the awesome vegan restaurant Sunflower?

    Posted August 23, 2009 at 11:51 am | Permalink

    Yep, the restaurant is Sunflower.

For those in Northern VA, highly recommended whether you’re a vegan/vegetarian or not (I’m not.) Their General Tso’s is a veggie doppelganger of the chicken original (it’s actually a bit spooky how much like meat the texture is; if you’ve ever read Frederick Pohl’s “Space Merchants” it’ll give you pause. But what I like most is that they don’t pull their punches with the spices and heat. We go to the one in Seven Corners, though the original is in Vienna, VA.

Not sure I have an opinion on the Vandyck. I’m used to Storm with it, but I haven’t seen a picture of him without it. Personally, I look worse without my beard.

I do like having a song at the end of the podcast. The time of the song compared to the length of the podcast is a fairly small percentage, and I like being exposed to new music (usually, and at least, new to me) or reminded of songs I’ve heard before (such as “But Mr. Adams”). I understand if, on occasion, you can’t come up with a song that fits your theme, but I’d rather it be there as a default. It’s like dessert after a well balanced Paul and Storm meal.

As a fat man with a graying goatee I have to say facial hair for the fat man win. And it was #24 telling number 21 that he was looking all kevin smith and then going on about chins and facial hair.

Happy podcast anniversary, here’s to many more! I remember talking to you guys after a show last year not too long after the podcast started and you were so excited to have *almost* 15 (and a half) Minions and now look: 50-something podcasts later and the Brigade 200+ strong! (BTW, count me as a fan of The Puppet as well)

Can’t say I’ve ever seen Storm sans facial hair, so I guess I’ll have to wait until the JJ show this Friday to weigh in. Getting excited to hear these new songs…

Congrats on your arbitrary belated anniversary! I enjoy your ramblings and musings. They make my week that much better. πŸ™‚

I’m finding it hard to picture the new Storm. Photographic evidence, please.

I bet you could parlay your Felicia Day connection into a Joss Whedon acknowledgment. She’s totally tight with him. (Also totally awesome. Have you seen her music video yet?). McCartney might be a little trickier.

By the way, I love the Vosges bacon chocolate bar. It is not jumping the shark; it is delicious. Their Red Fire bar is really good too.

Okay, I’ve seen the thinner version of Storm (Wow!) in the PAX videos on YouTube, but he’s grown the facial hair back. I guess that decides that. πŸ™‚
