Every day from December 1st until December 25th (for the benefit of our Festivus-celebrating friends, that’s Christmas Day), we’re presenting a brand-new Randy Newman-style movie theme song, posted at our spanky-new Bandcamp page. Oh, and they’re all available for download absolutely FREE! Of course, you’re certainly welcome to pay for them, if you like. (The site allows you to choose any amount…always appreciated, but by no means required) The songs are also available via iTunes and an RSS feed.

So head on over each morning to our Bandcamp page and check out the new daily Newman. It’s like an Advent calendar, but without the candy, and with a better soundtrack. Thank you to everyone who made movie suggestions—if you hear a movie that you suggested, go ahead and take some credit for it.

Web Love (and the Real Kind, Too)

First, the "real-world" love: many thanks to the crowd at this past Friday’s show at the Paradise in Boston; it was an amazing way to cap off the year for us, what with all the worked-up, sweaty geeks shouting and tossing a near-record pile of panties at us. Oh, and Jonathan was pretty good, too. Plus, Storm finally got the Xmas present he’s been waiting 38 years for (see left, thanks to fan Suzi for the pic), and he wasted no time when he got home terrifying his cats with it.

Also, big thanks to the many fine folks at Harmonix, who allowed us to eat some of their pizza, tour the offices, see a frickin’ laser, and screw around on Rock Band 2 for a couple hours Friday afternoon. A big bunch of them came to our show that night, which was cool, even if they did shout out a terrible request or two. You are forgiven, Harmonixites; everything’s gonna be fine, fine, fine.

On the "virtual love" track, we got some blog notice this week from Neatorama and Crooks and Liars. Hi, guys!

Playing Catch-Up

We’ve been home for almost a week, plugged back into our recharging pods, and are refresehed and awaiting our next Coulton deployment (which will be in Boston on Nov. 21). But we have a good bit of website-catching-up to do, not the least of which is to thank our audiences in Nottingham and Birmingham, both of whom were fun and excellent—you can read Jonathan’s summaries here and here, respectively—and we cannot emphasize enough how much we enjoyed our visit to our former tea-taxing brethren in the UK.

We learned a great many things in the Motherland. Among our discoveries:

Saying "cheers" works as an all-purpose greeting, toast, and apology
The Sheriff of Nottingham is a real person and is, at present, a very nice chap. Among his official duties: counting zombies
Fellow travelers are tolerant, if silently resentful, of large rolling bags in the London Underground
Scooby Snacks are, in fact, Jaffa Cakes
Even the lowliest banger (sausage) is terrific; bacon is not bacon
It seems that nobody is actually "from" Birmingham; it is, in that respect, much like Pontiac, MI

Now then, on to other business…in no particular order:

London: A Series of Tubes (or, Shepherds Bushed)

It would be difficult to describe in words how awesome last night’s show at Shepherds Bush Empire was (or how difficult it was transporting all of our baggage and merchandise through the London Tube) So we will merely list a string of random consonants:

DGSTRWMKJDFNWQQQQQQQJWFNJKSHSGDKSDLJF!!!

We think that says it all, don’t you?

In all seriousness, the show last night was tremendous–this takes nothing away from the Manchester show the previous evening, which was its own special brand of crazy/awesome–but Shepherds Bush Empire is an outstanding music venue: great acoustics, great staff, and what can be called the most delightfully sarcastic light show we’ve ever been a part of. (And trust us, it is indeed possible to light a show sarcastically) The punters in the hall were rowdy in just the right way; and they bought a metric crapload of merchandise.

Also, we learned that the going rate for Paul to bust out his best "Liza Minnelli in Cabaret" impression is £20. (We’re sure YouTube evidence will be forthcoming soon enough) Storm, unfortunately, did not get the chance to go the full monty, but says £2000 ought to do it. (Take note, anyone coming to our remaining two UK shows, though in truth we don’t recommend it)

Additional food tally: curry, Bishop’s Finger and Old Speckled Hen Fine Strong Ale, macaron (French pastry), more English breakfast (this time with baked beans; still no black pudding

GameCity in Nottingham tonight, then Birmingham tomorrow, then we go the hell home. Cheers!

One Down, Three to Go

A simply smashing first leg of the UK Tour with Coulton last night in Manchester. Staff was friendly; crowd was excitable and ready to have a great time; our myriad pop culture references seemed for the most part to translate properly; and Paul began his UK whoring in earnest, rocking his new Man U jersey during Jonathan’s set.

Of special note: author/raconteur/famous person/friend of the band Neil Gaiman, by sheer coincidence, was giving a reading last night approximately 400 yards down the road. Never ones to turn down a gift from the gods of chance, we implemented a literary/music exchange program: Neil kindly asked the three of us to perform a couple songs at the beginning of his reading; and then he showed up during Jonathan’s encore and brought the house down with a thoroughly spooky recitation of the second verse of "Creepy Doll". (We’re sure footage of it will show up on the YouTubes soon enough, for those who are interested)

Food tally: bangers and mash, fish and chips with mushy peas, various meat pies and cask conditioned ales, full cooked breakfast (on-train), spotted dick. Tonight we’re back in London (Indian cuisine), and then off to Nottingham. Wheeeeeee!

"The Ballad of Rufus Amos Adams", our submission for the latest round of the Masters of Song Fu songwriting competition is now available.

This time around, our task was to write a country ballad called "The Ballad of Rufus Amos Adams". We went old-timey on this one (there’s more than a little "Amazing Grace" in there), and took our lyrical inspiration from a semi-obscure Randy Newman song called "William Brown".

You know how, when people do past-life regression, they always were some sort of barbarian warlord, or Egyptian queen, or pope or something awesome and romantic romantic like that? And nobody ever was say, a serf, or footsoldier, or scrivener? Well, this song is kind of the musical version of that.

Voting has started, and will end this Wednesday night; this is the last round before the finals, so it’s all or nothing between us and the RiffTones. Go vote for your favorite now!

Super Dave—guitar player, video instructor of Jonathan Coulton songs, and all-around guy-with-too-much-free-time—has recorded another video guitar lesson, this time of our song "Live".

Because the song is so phenomenally awesome, it cannot be contained in a single video, so he’s split the lesson into two parts (Part 1 and Part 2). Thanks, Dave—both for liking the song enough to include it in the series, and for rocking the cool Batman t-shirt during the lesson.
