I’d love to hear either The Blues Brothers or Eraserhead…

Great podcast guys, although Liza is a scary image to go to sleep on.

My god, you guys are so my heroes. You know what would be the greatest Randy Newman theme song ever? Little Shop Of Horrors, a long-time favourite of mine. Definitely my number one choice. Number would probably be like, The Lion King (that is unless ofcourse you guys would to something really obscure like Strangers With Candy or The Wrong Guy).
    Cheers, your faithful minion,
    Jade
(also, I’m not sure if you guys would care or not, but how cool are you!? My best friend saw you guys in Grand Rapids, MI, and told me that you guys knew which minion I was by the description ‘Canadian’. It’s so great that you actually bother knowing your fans. Enough blathering, eh?)

Why are they called Jaffa cakes? Is there some connection between the cakes and the city? Or is the name arbitrary?

According to Wikipedia, they are indeed named for the Israeli Jaffa orange. Not sure if they’re entirely Kosher.

Can I be 3/5 of a minion? (Constitutional history joke, anyone?)

Panties AND scrats. Yeesh. Don’t forget Robert C. Baker the scrat.

Change the lyric to “And sad to say, as of today, no boxes of Jaffa Cakes have been thrown” and people will soon catch on.

“Eat my mushy peas” would have made a good title for this edition of the netcast.

Oh wow, the Newman thing sounds AWESOME! Cloverfield is good, “Go Clover, go”

    You guys srsly rock.

For minionhood since I don’t have a good digital camera, what if I set my Facebook status to “is a Paul and Storm Minion” and take a screenshot? Can I send that in?

You guys probably already have these on the list, but The Dark Knight and Iron Man were in SORE need of that Randy Newman magic in their soundtracks, in my humble opinion.

Oh, and The Shawshank Redemption would also be fun. ^_^

Sounds like England was awesome. I gotta find me one of them Jaffa Cakes…

I’m going to make an odd suggestion for a Newman song. Not a movie, a TV show. Okay, not a real TV show, but a fictional TV show.

That’s right, Randy Newman needs to do the theme to Monkey Shines. Make it so!

(also, glad you enjoyed our country)

    Movie suggestions:

    Dune

    Stranger Than Fiction

    The Oceans’ series. (11, 12, 13)

    Forrest Gump

    Contact

    I think that’s good.

Randy Newman wouldn’t go amiss with Jurassic Park or Aliens, however I think one of the greatest buddy movies of all time – Jaws – would be a winner.

Guys, you were full of awesomeness at Gamecity!!! My mate was much chuffed with winning your CD and Jaffa cakes…hmmm maybe we should set up trade links to keep your addiction going :D

As for Newman movie songs… why not Kill Bill… they were once her friends, now she mist kill them all!!!

King Kong could also be cool, the ape only wants some human loving!

Till ya play this area again!!!!

Here’s my Randy Newman suggestion: every Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan movie ever made. They may not all be identical but they are identical in that they all suck.

Wandering through the “world food” section of my grocery store this afternoon, I found many, many boxes of Jaffa Cakes sitting on the shelf. And, since you two were so enthusiastic about them in the podcast, I bought a box.

I tried one, liked it and put the box in the cupboard. A few minutes later, I went back to the box for another one. And then another. Before I knew it, I had eaten the whole damn thing.

Obviously, I enjoyed them, as well. The problem is that I’m supposed to go visit my mom to have her homemade spaghetti for dinner (AKA my comfort food!!) and I have no appetite. :(

Although, if you’re looking for a place in the US to get these, it looks like Michigan is the place to be. HINT HINT! ;)

You know, Randy Newman work for things other than movies. For example, take breakfast cereals:

    Snap, Crackle, Pop,
    they never stop;
    gonna take those Rice Krispies
    straight to the top.

    Tony the Tiger
    didn’t like his cornflakes
    so he got ‘em frosted
    and now, they’re great!

    Nobody believed that
you could stay crunchy in milk

    And that’s just for starters.

    More:

You are a part of this nutritious breakfast.

    Hi guys,

Saw you in Birmingham, UK (thanks for the CD & Jaffa Cakes btw!)
Jaffa Cakes are without doubt THE comfort food !

How about the exorcist for the Randy Newman thing ?

    Cheers mate :)

  22. Posted November 5, 2008 at 4:21 pm | Permalink

I can’t help giggling when I read ‘Paul freely fesses up to his poseur-hood’. Did you know that ‘fesse’ is French for buttock?

I had my first ever Jaffa cake after the Nottingham show and my second during the Birmingham show (thanks for sharing, John and whoever it was in Nottingham!) Just narrowly avoided becoming addicted.

Also, I remember thinking of some Randy Newman lyrics after the show in Birmingham, before the insanity had died down to usual background levels. They’re kind of stupid, but hey, if you’re doing 25 of these, perhaps you’ll need stupid ideas. Here’s the beginning of a Randy Newman theme song for the Large Hadron Collider (mostly recyclotroned from the ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ theme.)

    Built a ring,
    pretty big thing.
But now we’ve gone and messed up everything.

…and then some other stuff, but I can’t think of three rhymes at the moment… and maybe ‘go protons, go’.

Also, I second Lex’s suggestion. Or if you’re getting tired of living in JoCo’s shadow, you could always, you know, do Randy Newman’s “Theme Song To Paul and Storm“. Go, dick jokes, go!

Well, I’m not really a fan of it myself, but how about something around ‘Sleepless in Seattle’? You will be here in January, after all…

As for movies I’d actually LIKE to hear Randy-Newman-ized:
    Clue
    Night Watch (Russian Vampires)
    Kevin Smith movies
    Bourne movies
    Firestarter
    Carrie
    Princess Bride

  24. Posted November 6, 2008 at 6:36 am | Permalink

I agree, you definitely need to do The Princess Bride. Also, perhaps The Matrix and The Muppet Show. Bonus points for a Randy Newman song in a Kermit voice.

I’d like to remind you that (if I recall correctly… my iPod battery is flat) people are going to expect you to write a Randy Newman theme to the Department of Commerce. Don’t blame me, it was your idea.

Also, I thought of this while my code was compiling (hoping that the first two lines rhyme in a suitable American accent):

Paul and Storm’s ‘Randy Newman’s “Theme from ‘Jonathan Coulton: The Movie’”’

    You had a bub,
    and quit your job.
You didn’t sit around and act like a slob.

Your new technique [or: you reached your peak / with...]
    was Thing a Week,
a million monkeys and the heart of a geek.

To make a living from recording your songs,
you had to manage all the digital wrongs.
Nobody believed that he could win. [why does this line always use the third person while the rest of the song is in the second person?]
    Go, JoCo, go!
    You’re our friend

    Go, JoCo, go!
You got a reason to live.

I’m wondering whether I should do a Gingerlink and you offer 20 pounds to sing it. Do you think it’d work?

  29. Posted November 6, 2008 at 1:27 pm | Permalink

Oops, that was supposed to be ‘offer you’, not ‘you offer’. I’d also like to point out that (if I recall correctly… my iPod battery is still flat) the first day of Newman is JoCo’s birthday.

    -Duck Tales

    -Thundercats

    -G.I Joe

    -Transformers

    -Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

  34. Ann
    Posted November 6, 2008 at 8:14 pm | Permalink

I’m apparently a day late and a dollar short as all of my original ideas of Princess Bride, Shawshank, Kill Bill and Cloverfield have already been spoken for. In that case:

    The Evil Dead
    Office Space
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the movie from 1990)
    Psycho
    The Shining
    Apocalypse Now
    Jaws
Any really really really bad disaster movie like: Volcano or Aftershock, 10.5 or Inferno.

Oh and for the record…you boys started awarding the fractional minion counts of your own free volition (and out of the kindness of your own hearts if i might say)…my cat and I had *nothing* to do with it ;-)
And doubly for the record, she still hates me for making her wear the pirate hat.

As a fellow Jaffa Cake fan, I suggest you check your grocery store in the cookie aisle for Pim’s. Very nice and probably easier to find.

  36. Posted November 7, 2008 at 1:13 am | Permalink

Oh, I was wondering whether Pim’s could be considered equivalents of Jaffa Cakes. I know where to get those. :)

Oh, and one more suggestion: Masters of the Universe (the live-action He-Man film)

25 songs in 25 days? Are you nuts? By Christmas you’ll need some serious anti-Randy Newman mental health counseling.

My 2 cents: go with the highest box office films. The shared experience of a movie that everyone has seen more than once fits best. Dark Knight, Titanic, Spider Man, Harry Potter, etc.

  38. Rich
    Posted November 7, 2008 at 1:15 pm | Permalink

Crazy idea: do the Randy Newman theme song for a silent movie. Perhaps something from Charlie Chaplin. Just the piano, no words. Or maybe make a video with Paul playing and Storm holding up cards with the lyrics on them.

  39. Posted November 7, 2008 at 4:06 pm | Permalink

And the rhymes would all be eye rhymes! Cool idea, Rich.

Now, where do I sign up to become an official minion?
