UK Tour – The T-Shirt?

We (meaning Jonathan Coulton and ourselves) are considering making a "limited edition" commemorative tour shirt for this October’s tour of the UK together. And we’d like to use one of Storm’s UK Tour Photoshop mashups for the design.

Below, we have listed our favorites; if you would, please take a moment to answer the poll below. This will help us to decide which design to actually use. We’re intending to sell these only at the live shows in the UK, but if there are leftovers, we may put those on sale back in the US. But once this run is done, it’s done. Hence the "limited" part of "limited edition."

Please note: we are asking which, if any, you would ACTUALLY PAY MONEY FOR. While it is nice to know which design is everyone’s favorite, we’re also trying to get a sense of the demand for the thing in general. Becasue the last thing we want is a couple hundred of these things growing dust in our collective basements. For the same reason, please also only vote once (unless you intend to buy multiple shirts or something).

UPDATE: Whichever design that "wins" will get "cleaned up" before actual "printing."

Here are the choices (click on a design for a larger version):

 Coulton/PS-Madness  Mandelbrot-Floyd

 Coulton-U2

First is easily the best, guys.

I think the Mandelbot-Floyd is more universal. Also, I’m currently listening to “Animals” so I’m gonna take that as a sign.

Glad to see that you took me up on my suggestion. Whether you did or didn’t, I will still insist that this was all my idea. 😉 I intend to place an order with one of the UK folks attending.

Like James said it’s moar universal. It was the first one to which I understood the reference immediately after looking at it. Plus it could be worn for non-P+S or non-JoCo reasons (though that can be fixed with a nice URL somewhere on the shirt.

Mandelbrot-Floyd is good, but at full resolution it looks a bit off. The beams! They are broken!

    So I’m voting for Madness.

No worries, Thomas. Any shirt we decide to print will get a thoroughly anal retentive clean-up before being sent to the printer.

While Mandelbrot-Floyd is more universal, I actually want to show off that I went to a JoCoPasto concert, so I voted for the one that says that. Mandelbrot Set T-shirts are easy to come by, and I’m indifferent to Pink Floyd (it may be that I’m not indifferent to some of their songs, I just don’t know who they’re by.)

Also, might it be possible to put some “UK Tour” verbiage on the back of the Mendelbrot-Floyd t-shirt, if that’s the one that that wins?

Um, Mandelbrot. I can spell; I just can’t type. 🙂

Thanks for reading my thoughts, Colleenky. Though that would just make it more difficult for me to make the decision. Good thing I already voted.

Colleenky: Mendelbrot is bread made from cereals which you have carefully bred to have certain Mendelian characteristics. Bred bread, if you will.

I agree. They need some UK Tour verbiage. Use words like “bloke” and “trolley” and “bangers and mash”!

But, seriously… I like the Coulton/PS-Madness design best. It’s interesting, weird and fun. And, It’s got just the right touch of “Ministry of Silly Walks” to make it “local”. Plus, the design doesn’t break the frame. That gives it a “completeness” that the others lack.

I like the Colton-U2 one the most, but would probably never wear it. Therefore, madness!

Hmm… I like the Pink Floyd/Mandelbrot set one, as do most people…
I can’t stand the way the light is coming out, though. While certainly evocative, it’s just plain ugly. (And what’s up with the purple hiding in the corner?)

Personally, I like all of them but my favorite has to be the Madness shirt. I would feel comfortable to wear it anywhere.

I like them all, but none of them says “Jonathan Coulton” to me. I want a T-shirt that’s all totally like “I’m a jonathan Coulton Fan”. I’d buy that T-shirt.

I won’t buy the Mandelbrot shirt, and I promise to buy the Madness shirt. Take that for what it’s worth (about $22).

Hey! Where’s the Shaun of the Dead one?!?
I’d make my friend in England buy that one for me! 🙂

The Mandelbrot-Floyd design is the cleanest of the three. While the Madness design is amusing, I think Mandelbrot-Floyd will make for a sharper T-shirt. I’ve already “ordered” my shirt.

Oh, hey. I see that you’ve set up a donation button, implementing yet another of my suggestions. 😉

I second the Shaun of the Dead shirt for supremacy…but I assume you might run into some legal trouble there, so that’s why it got excluded?

I require Mandelbrot Floyd as part of my Paul and Storm/JoCo wardrobe.

Love the Mandelbrot Floyd one as long as it is a proper tour t-shirt with tour dates on the back. This would also be a perfect place to actually put your names as I also feel wearing the name loud and proud would be cool.

You know what I’ve noticed – the best way to sell merch is to actually “model” it live – so wear the shirts on stage and around town and wherever you go. That sells things.

  26. Posted September 12, 2008 at 9:18 pm | Permalink

I don’t know where JoCoPaSto is(are) planning to have the shirts done. But, there can be problems printing two sides of a dark shirt – depending on the process used. (Trust me. I’ve designed LOTS of t-shirts!) Don’t choose a design counting on there being something on the back.

I prefer the Madness one, but would buy that and the Mandlebrot-Floyd shirt.

The Madness one would also look good in coloUrs* other than black.

The Mandelbrot-Floyd shirt is so full of awesome! That one should just be for sale online and you can make Madness the tour shirt.

I would go for the first one, the madness parody. It works on many levels, even if your not overly familiar with the Madness original. But without wishing to appear snotty, I don’t think the finishing looks as good as it could. Given the opportunity, the permission and the relevant images, I believe I could ‘work it up’.
No charge, quick turn around, just say the word.

  30. Posted September 16, 2008 at 9:18 am | Permalink

By far the Mandlebrot/Floyd. The two others don’t mean much to me, and are too blatant: The Floyd one took me a second to figure out, and then I was all “ooh, that’s awesome!”

It’ll look good next to my “Welcome to scenic Skullcrusher Mountain” t-shirt. 😀

  31. Posted September 16, 2008 at 9:19 am | Permalink

I forgot to add – would it be possible to print the image so large that the colour stripes actually extend to the edge of the t-shirt? With the Mandlebrot over the heart, and coloured stripes extending from the edges of the t, that would look pretty cool.

[OT] Anyone out there with enough ray-tracing fu to simulate the pattern of a beam aligned on x-axis traversing in positive direction encountering a [low-order] Mandelbrot set crystal? (High-order Mdb set would scatter photons every-frickin’-where[1]; personally am wondering what the refraction pattern might look like with a chunky approzimation…)

[1] And if not, YOU are in line for the next Nobel prize! Submit your answer in 100 words or less … sorry, can’t finish this. ;^)

First thought: swap the order of spectrum! As shown, red is first/most deflected beam (should be least), so make this blue (most prone to scatter/refraction); other colors follow same logic, unless fractal is of handful-wavelengths size.
Still love it, still has my vote. WANT!
