I think the most influence in my life would have to be Jim Henson, Cobra Commander, The Goblin King, Jareth (played by David Bowie), and Spock! I cannot think of enough words to describe the universe of influence Mr. Henson had on me. 90% of childhood/teenage years revolved around his creations. For ever in his debt, for the creative wildfire he gave me. CC never gave up no matter how many times his plans were ruined, I loved the Cool collected and yet very tender Goblin King, and Spock was my foundation reminding me to keep on hand firmly on Logic and reality.

My two heroes that I want to be when I’m grown-up, (For the record, 22 is not grown-up.) are Hank McCoy and Hugh Glass. If you don’t know the first, you are barely a geek. The second was a man who wrestled a bear, lost, was left for dead by the men he saved, then crawled to safety. Safety being over 200 miles away. Did I mention that this was in South Dakota in 1823?

Laugh, but I always wanted to be MacGyver. The ability to jury-rig his way out of a completely absurd situation using whatever was lying around at the moment I found (and still find) endlessly fascinating. So naturaslly, I firmly believe just about anything can be fixed using my multitool and liberal amounts of duct tape. Eventually friends joked about my ‘MacGyvering’ of stuff and it’s kinda stuck, even now. I still love fixing and disassembling things just for the hell of it and my coworkers find it rather amusing (since I sit at a desk all day) and every once in a while resurrect it as my nickname, which makes me pretty proud.

I always wanted to grow up to be a superhero, like The Flying Nun. Instead, at present, I am a definitive Bridget Jones, fighting off perverts in wannabe suitor disguise and still searching for my Mark Darcy. My favorite shakes come from a NW Chain “Burgerville” they use locally grown fruit, when it’s in season, and fresh ice cream from our local Tillamook dairy Jealous?
I’m not sure what to make of this, but many people say I look like Sally Fields. So, there’s that.

I want to be Paul and Storm. For being a kiss ass will you mention me in the next podcast?

I also wish I was a cross between Stephen Connolly and David Hurley, both of whom sing in the King’s Singers, Connolly as a bass (Who can reach a bottom C) and Hurley as a Counter Tenor (Male Soprano, Hurley can get up to a stupidly high F I think). I want that range so badly. Then all the girls would want me. Or they’d be confused because I could sing higher than them. Don’t think I’ve thought this through.

In fiction, I’ve rarely come across someone who’s anything like me. Not really read any books for a while though. Then again, I’m reading Game of Thrones, and if the level of plot immunity is the same as what I keep hearing it is, I’ll probably find me in there: The person who’s crazy and dies in a war on the next page.

There is a milkshake place near where I live which is awesome. But probably the same as every other one like it, they just put sweets in a milkshake, making it awesome.

I can find pieces of myself in a lot of characters in a lot of fictional worlds, so it’s kind of impossible to pick just one. For example, using the Breakfast Club standard, I’ve got a good bit of Allison’s shy/weridness, Brian’s bouts of nerd/know-it-all, Andrew’s frustration, Claire’s insecurity (and love of sushi), and Bender’s anger at the world. (Which is sort of the point of the ending voiceover, I know, and probably why the movie is so enduring.) So I could fill pages with the characters I feel I resemble. I guess you’d have to ask my friends to get a more specific answer than that.

My favorite shakes are and probably ever shall be Friendly’s Fribbles. They’re so thick and luscious, and perfect for dipping french fries in. Plus, I grew up on Friendly’s ice cream. The possible exception is Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate (formerly “World’s Best Chocolate”) because that carries nostalgia from my college years.

Growing up, I always wanted to be like Yvonne Craig’s Barbara Gordon/Batgirl: Spending all day in the library being studious, and having a kick ass alter ego by night (though perhaps with a bit less spandex). It’s unoriginal, but as a teacher, I would love to be like John Keating from Dead Poets Society. By this I don’t mean the losing my job bit, but the inspiring students to questions conformity and look at the world in a different way. But, alas, being called “O Captain! My Captain!” will have to wait until I have tenure. Some of my current students do call me Yoda, though, which is almost as good.

Believe it or not, the person I’d like to model myself after isn’t Jonathan Coulton but John Hodgman. His interview with Ken Plume last year just blew me away. Intelligent, witty, charming, passionate, unflappable, yet humble and unbelievably gracious and kind. All admirable qualities.
