I believe the '90s band you were struggling for is the Soup Dragons (most famous for the singles "I'm Free" and "Divine Thing", which are pretty much the same song).

I'm (only a little) under 30, but I watched the animated Hobbit many times in my youth. Haven't seen it since I was about ten, though, so maybe it's time to get it on DVD and see it again.

A) I don't remember what my first music purchase was, but it was almost certainly a cassette tape rather than a 45. Knowing my musical tastes from twenty years ago, it was probably insipid pop of the New-Kids-on-the-Block persuasion. (Hey, it was the '80s. Everybody liked insipid pop. I still do, under some circumstances.) I did own a few vinyl LPs, but sadly they were lost in a house fire a couple years ago.

B) For Paul and Storm, 2009 will be 'The Year of Surpassing Coulton's Fame'. I mean, come on. There are two of you (plus the puppet). You can totally take him down. Especially considering the way you guys upstaged him at the Boston show.

Love that song at the end of the episode, by the way. Gonna have to check out the band's site now. Thanks for pimping other good stuff.

a.) Glad to know I'm not the only one who unabashedly pilfered their big sister's music collection. Now she raids mine, which I find amusing.

b.) For Paul and Storm, 2009 will be 'The Year of the Great Minion Mobilization'. Enemies will be vanquished, chaos shall be had, cocktails will be served.

Even though you seem to be moving toward a geekier fan base, I have some decidedly non-geeky friends who are quite looking forward to seeing you guys to perform this year. Hmmm, maybe 2009 will turn out to be the year of "Ann's friends finally understand her "(blank) is the name of my other emo band" joke. :-D

I'm under 30 and I've seen the animated Hobbit (more than once, sadly). Though, to be fair, I think it has less to do with age and more to do with geekiness. But, as you said in the podcast, you're embracing an increasingly geeky fanbase, so I guess that's okay. :)

I have the animated Hobbit as an avi. It's also available on youtube; but I don't know if that's technically legal, or just hasn't been caught yet. Either way, you won't get in trouble for watching it.

First 45: Theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. (I still don't know why.)

@Roman Of course! What kind of Order of the Inner Sanctum Guard minion would I be if I hadn't seen that video? :-) While I can't put away quite as much them, I still like food a whole lot. Really a lot. Especially the cheesy kind. Mmmmm. Cheeeese....

Says the woman who loves food - *almost* as much as you guys!

Rereading that, it sounds ... wrong. To clarify, I meant that I love food almost as much as you guys love food. (Is it even possible to love food as much as you do?)

Ain't no business dope as yours... it's just so "FRESH" and.... clean?

Wait you flew? "Opening Band" implies there's a van... Hmm...

It almost sounds like Storm has harems on layaway...

"I cleared the threshold a while ago" is what SHE said.

You didn't piss me off. This was far more interesting than that week when you talked about toilet paper, and well, stuff. Plus, it's OK for Storm to talk about how awesome he is, because, well he's awesome. It would be like saying you couldn't talk about the fact that it's raining when you look outside and see rain falling.

What is this magic soup? Care to elaborate?

The Internet sounds like Homer Simpson?

Not magical trees, cigarette trees. Hodgman said so.

I helped you guys with that having to lug around merchandise problem. See, I bought a CD, that means less weight. Then, I had you sign it, which means the marker now has less ink, thus also less weight. See, I'm helping!

Is the old original animated Hobbit of which you speak on the Internets legally? I am 20, which by definition means I'm under 30.

I know you already flew, but dang. I would have recommended you come to Cleveland. A lot of cool people are here. Len and Nora from Jawbone... Roman's here, I here that guy's cool.

I love Mythbusters - it's one of my favorite shows on TV now - science, math, suspolisions - what's NOT to like?

As a minion, I've already twittered to Savage. I think you could get more minions to do this. Or we can just send a random user our favorite cereal again.

The thing about Twitter and famous people, is not all famous people reply. There's people like MC Hammer, who if you follow them they will follow you back. Hammer has about 17,000 followers and by the look of his profile, he responds to all of them. Most of the politicians who were on Twitter had a script or something set up that will automatically follow anyone who follows them. I guess, you need to look at their following numbers and follower numbers. They should be following at least as many people (if not more) than people who are following them. In my case (I know I'm not famous... yet, but go with me here) I'm following 188 and I have 133 followers. That's a good thing.

Did you ever consider that he gets a number of "kabillions" of twitters posted at him too? The difference is they're all under 140 characters, so easy to sift through.

The thing about play counts is, you forget the large number of your fans who are octopi, having found you from Coulton's tribute song to them. They have eight arms, and eight computers. Therefore the numbers may be inflated, not to try to be a downer or anything.

I'm partial to Bob Marley's cover of "I Shot the Sheriff."

I think this year has been Paul and Storm's major expansion. You're doing more with the fan base - polls, netcasts, tournaments, videos, photo shops, etc. This is great. I think next year will get even better. You'll find more outlets for your unique brand of comedy and music and will gain more and more fans.

Oddly enough, the only 45 I can remember having any part of purchasing was the Read-Along version of The Hobbit based on the movie. "At the sound of the chimes, please turn the page."

And clearly, after having successfully completed the Philly-Columbus-Philly junket, for Paul and Storm, 2009 will be the year of harems and magic soup.

Thanks for a hilarious 2008, hope to see you in Madison again soon!

Wait, Paul...you're flying to Columbus, just to get back on a plane to Philly? Just to gain extra miles?

The first 45 record I remember buying for myself was at a garage sale in 1975. It was a Disney record that had "The Story of Paul Bunyan" on side A and "Higitus Figitus" from "Sword in the Stone" on side B.

It took very little to entertain me back then. :)

For Paul and Storm, 2009 will be "The Year they made Geekdom become suave, hip, and otherwise cool."

Happy New Year!

Like Mr. Storm, I never bought any 45s for myself, just listened to my older siblings'. I think that the first LP I bought may have been the soundtrack for Ghostbusters. (My first star crushes were Paul McCartney and then Bill Murray. I don't know what *that* says about me. :-S)

I'll have to think about how to complete your motto for 2009. How about "Harnessing the Power of the Geek"?
