My comfort food is posole. A New Mexican stew made with hominy corn simmered for hours with pork and chile plus other vegetables such as onions and garlic. We usually eat it during the Christmas (holiday) season.

My discomfort food is pretty much anything green and crunchy!

Yellow curry is definitely my comfort food.
Either that or something mixed with enough sugar and caffeine to give an elk organ failure. Also Santiago's green chile (Hottest friggin chile in colorado)

My favorite comfort food: Macaroni with Campbell's condensed tomato soup right out of the can as a sauce (but not too much). I know it's a strange one, but my mother used to make us this as an inexpensive side dish all the time. It definitely feels like a hug to me.

Discomfort food: Olives. Bleck!

Boo to Mrs. Flibble for dissing water chestnuts. While I wouldn't call them a comfort food, they are indeed one of nature's finest creations.

I've recently discovered a new comfort food: New England style lobster rolls. It's a little silly that I was born and raised there and had to move to Missouri before actually trying one, but there you have it. The cool and tasty lobster meat, mixed with mayo, a little lemon juice, some parsley flakes and lightly dusted with paprika, all nestled in a buttered and toasted New England style hot dog roll. Oh yeah, you know what I'm saying.

Ahhhhhh.

Discomfort food:
Water chestnuts. They make all of my teeth jump .25 inch to the left.
Capicola (gabagool) ham. Yikes, what a texture.

Kraft Mac&Cheese is the first and main thing that comes to mind.

There's also "tuna hot dish" (tuna casserole made with cream of mushroom soup with crumbled potato chips on top) or "tuna cold dish" (tuna salad with shell noodles). Can you tell I'm from Minnesota?

I'm late to the comfort food party.

My comfort food is a KFC Famous Bowl, which for the uninitiated is chicken nuggets over mashed potatoes, gravy, cheese, and corn. The boyfriend calls it "America: The Bowl."

I actually mark my calendar on days when I have one, and only allow myself to have one each month or so — otherwise I would eat them all the time.

P.P.P.S. This is what I get for responding before listening to all of the podcasts.

Comfort food memory: My husband cannot cook. This is a guy who used to measure out the water to boil the noodles for Kraft mac & cheese. But when I was sick, he actually made a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup for me. And it was good! :-)

P.S. Forgot to add, for mapping purposes, I'm in Los Angeles. Also, yes, I did eat that sandwich. Yum!

P.P.S. Maybe in my next comment, I will remember everything I intend to say and not have to post another P.S.

A bit late to the party here. Just catching up on the podcasts.

Comfort foods:
- mashed potatoes
- Mom's pot roast
- homemade mac & cheese
- grilled cheese and Campbell's tomato soup

Discomfort foods:
- mushrooms (actually make me gag)
- most seafood (tastes smelly)

I'll let you decide on this next one. I've only met one other person outside of my immediate family who likes this. One of my dad's favorites: peanut butter and mayonnaise sanwiches. Let's see if the photo embeds work. If not, here's the link.

My comfort foods are mash potatoes with gravy, a ham and muenster cheese sandwich with mayonnaise, tomato and lettuce on wheat bread and a Chipotle Burrito with rice, steak, tomatoes, sour cream, cheese and lettuce.

My discomfort foods are mushrooms, mushy onions (I like crisp onions), prunes and cottage cheese.

The fantasy world I would live in is that of James Bond because James Bond is amazing.

Comfort foods:
Mac n cheese, a hot pretzel and a large drink with lots of ice, half Mountain Dew, half green Gatorade from Wawa (Philly area 7-11 type place.) The beverage, by the by, is also good for hangovers. The two comfort fords I miss being a vegetarian are Lebanon bologna & pork roll. Yves cuisine are you listening?

Fantasy world:
Wouldn't want to live there but a trip to Victorian London to meet Sherlock Holmes would be dandy.

Comfort Food: Mom got a recipe for an Amish cake dessert called Woopie Pies from my great aunt Anastasia. These are round versions of Devil Dogs® only 100% better.

These were an all day procedure as you had to make the cake halves and then you had to add the frosting in the middle, then wrap them. These were wonderful. Rich and moist with a wonderful cream filling. Mom's fudge's is great too.

For lunch once in a while Oscar Meyer Fried Bolgna sandwich with the edge a bit burnt.

Discomfort food: Patty Pan squash. It is to weird of a shape. Also mushrooms. I was staying at one of my mom's friends and she made pancakes for dinner except, for some weird freaking reason she put canned mushrooms in them. I sat there for a long time picking all the mushrooms out. I think I remember telling her please don't put any in mine. Why do adults do crap like that to kids?

Favorite fantasy place: All I wanted was the Map of Time from Time Bandits when I was younger.

Now I like the idea of Disc World. I would make a good Granny Weatherwax one day.

I'm a little behind on the podcast, but I thought I'd chime in anyway.

Comfort foods: Beef stew (my great-grandmother's recipe using her secret ingredient), chicken pot pie, and tuna casserole. Pretty much variations on a theme, now that I think about it.

Discomfort foods: There are very few foods I actively dislike, but I don't like eggplant or zucchini on their own. Oh, and bologna is on my only-if-I'm-dying list, although hot dogs (which are basically the same thing) are a hockey game staple. Go figure.

Comfort foods: macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese, fried cheese curds (particularly the ones served with buttermilk ranch dressing at Hickory Park in Ames, IA. Actually, just about anything at Hickory Park qualifies as really awesome comfort food). Hmm. Odd, it seems there's a theme here.

Discomfort foods: Just about anything with onions. Also baloney/bologna-- this one is particularly painful because I used to love baloney sandwiches when I was a kid (particularly if there was a mustard smiley face!), but my parents bought some questionable bologna/baloney from a dingy little shop on a camping trip once when I was maybe 6 or 7, and it was awful. It tasted like someone had thought it'd be funny if they smoked the meat, but used cigarettes instead of hickory wood. My mother insisted there was nothing wrong with it, and, in an attempt to "get rid of it before it went bad" (refusing to accept that it had probably already gone bad), refused to let me have anything else for dinner but a baloney sammich. I went on a hunger strike and she finally got the point. I don't think I've touched the stuff since.

Comfort: my mother's flan, with extra caramel. Nothing else will do. Except maybe my grandmother's couscous with marga.

Dis-comfort: I like oysters, somewhat--once I've resolved to not think too much about what I'm eating, have resigned myself to the inevitable oyster grit, and have dosed the oyster with a healthy squeeze of lemon (not quite 1:1 oyster:lemon, but not far off). And, honestly, I don't like oysters ENOUGH that the payoff's worth all the not-thinking and lemonifying.

In the "foods I loathe" category, I nominate cheese and bananas. I seem to be alone in the Banana Haters Club, but I'll have you know that I've met two fellow cheese-haters. One of whom was full-blooded French. So there.

Comfort: I make a killer cream of potato soup with leek and dill that I learned from my mother and tweaked. It's my #1 comfort food.

Discomfort: I ADORE cucumbers. They, however, inexplicably do not share my attraction. They manage to give me terrible heartburn. *pout* What did I ever do to THEM?

I always wanted to open a door and find Narnia waiting for me. I still kind of do. :)

@Candace: wait...cry? For reals? Please share the details on this trauma if you would, I find it most intriguing. Were you attacked by a roving band of beets as a child? So many food phobias: we seem to be very odd group of people, don't we?

Comfort food: fresh homemade bread/ tortillas/ sopaipillas
I have great memories of waking up in my grandmother's house to the smell of her making tortillas and roasting green chilies over the fire.

Discomfort food: Anything citrus. It burns me like bleach.

Fantasy world: I always wanted to live in Willy Wonka's factory where everything was edible and everything was exciting and fun but still a little dangerous.

Comfort food: Tomato, ripe and fresh from the vine. Cut the thickest slab you can, and put it on bread coated in a good layer of mayonaise. Salt a little. Add another bit of mayo-bread, and eat. A BLT without B or L.... but, a tomato that has never been chilled, with the brightness of summer.... reminds me of a great youth.

Discomfort vood: Vienna sausages. I wanted to say chitlins, but there is something about that gelled goup on the top of the sausages right after opening the can.... ::shudder::

Fantasy World: I grew up in the StarWars era, so I loved that world. I also wanted to live on The Galactia (though I'm not Mormon). I liked the lands of Tron (I'd have to insist on being a user, though). Strangely, though, I never considered the negatives -- I wasn't worried about the MCP, or the Emperor, or the Cylons.... huh.
